IP Telephony enables the use of open standard LAN and distributed data networks for the transport of voice, replacing the use of traditional (and proprietary) telephone networks and equipment. With IP Telephony, voice conversations are converted into packets of data and then transmitted over data networks in much the same manner as e-mails or instant messages.

IP telephony (Internet Protocol telephony) is a general term for the technologies that use the Internet Protocol’s packet-switched connections to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information that have traditionally been carried over the dedicated circuit-switched connections of the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
